I first became aware of Alison Ballard and her adorable brand ‘Silly Old Seadog’ when she traded at London Edge. Her stall certainly popped with colours and patterns, and Alison and her gorgeous friend, model and assistant who accompanied her to the show were both dressed in the brand and they looked amazing.
Alison handmakes all of her garments using fabrics that she sources and loves. Her garments are currently available in sizes 6-28 – which is massive for a fairly new brand. Alison’s designs are heavily inspired by actual vintage pieces, and she handmakes everything here in the UK.

Alison recently contacted me asking if I would like to try some pieces from her range, and we decided on two 1950’s style sleeved dresses. The dresses are cut quite generously with decent bust room, and so Alison sent me a 14 in a Retro Gamer Pacman dress and a 16 in a Pink&White Loveheart dress.

Both dresses fitted well – however, the sleeves on the gamer dress were a little too tight. I have very squishy arms so both dresses look very tight on the arms. The fit in the bust was extremely firm on the 14 without squashing me.
The dresses are made of 100% cotton which is fairly thin, but not thin enough to be see through – perfect for hotter days. They do not crease easily and the patterns are beautiful. These are 50cm long and the larger sizes are 62cm long.
I know that the price points might put some people off, but every brand deserves the right to pitch themselves where they want to. These dresses are handmade in the UK made using 100% cottons and the patterns are gorgeous. They don’t feel like they would fall apart easily and they would certainly make you stand out.
The petticoat was an ideal length to go with both dresses, and it was lovely and soft. The belts fit me really well and they were perfect colour matches. And my Primark shoes helped add the finishing touches.
As mentioned, the brand makes clothes in sizes 6-28, and their models really reflect this. Since the beginning they’ve used slimmer and larger models and they’ve not divided them with a plus size section which is ace! The range of fun, quirky and adorable prints is amazing and Alison is always adding new products and photos.
